Get to know the agencies that oversee the health issues and concerns in our lives.

 

Do you ever wonder about the agencies that make major decisions about our health issues? It is important to know what these agencies are and what they do. Some of them are government operated and some are non-profits organizations. They all play an important role in our lives when it comes to physical, mental, social, and emotional health. They set the guidelines on physicals, eating habits, and a host of other issues. Read on and learn about the cause of each of these agencies.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-www.fda.gov- Taken straight from their website, this is the mission of the FDA-"The FDA is responsible for protecting the public health by assuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, our nation's food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation, and by regulating the manufacture, marketing, and distribution of tobacco products." So in other words they are the watch dog group on anything that is food and drug related.

American Academy of Pediatrics-www-aap.org-Oversees and sets the guidelines for the health and safety of children. This includes all areas of health including mental, physical and social health. Often times when they make a statement about an issue it will make headlines. They are famous for their recommendations about parenting.

Center for Disease Control (CDC) www.cdc.gov-Monitors and oversees the diseases that affect not just the United States but the world. They are also known for their recommendation on control of epidemics, spread of diseases, and how diseases begin. They truly believe that education, prevention, and research are the best defense against diseases and the spread of them. The website is unbelievable. It is truly a super wealth of information.

United States Department of Agriculture-(USDA)www.usda.gov-Is responsible for the safety of  agriculture to include farming, safety of animals and animal products, vegetables, and fruits. The USDA also has a huge educational mission to teach about food safety, nutrition, and ways for others to get learn more about agriculture. This agency is also responsible for the school lunch programs in the country.

American Medical Association (AMA)-ama-assa.org This agency consists of physicians and other medical/health providers that set the guidelines and approval of the many medical practices that happen every day. They work closely with all the other agencies as well to come to conclusions and to have a base for their findings. The website is great and is a wealth of information. Insurance companies listen closely to the AMA and base many of their payment plans on what this agency recommends.
